"Soloist Wu eventually joined in on suona, a Chinese double-reed instrument... dazzling listeners with buzzes tweets, chuffs, chortles, and an imossibly long high note on one breath that was beyond any bird known to science, maybe even Dizzy Gillespie. As the orchestra rose to an avian cacophony, a cymbal player came downstage for a contest with Wu, who chased him back to his place with suona blasts."

Performance

“Most impressive of all were the bird sounds made by the Sheng, an instrument that is totally evocative of nature. I found myself transfixed by it.

"I have had the absolute privilege of studying the Sheng under Teacher Wu since I was 7 years old. Over the years, he has truly become more than just a music teacher to me–he is a profound mentor in both muysic and life. Under his guidance, I have built a strong foundation in technical ability, while he deeply shaped my musicality and helped me find my own voice. He also taught me the nuances of showmanshiop and stagecraft, giving me the confidence to truly connect with the audience. Beyond mastering the instrument, Teacher Wu has taught me lessons in patience, resiliance, and character that extend far beyond the classroom. He is a magnificent teacher and mentor."
